This year, the NCL Outreach team will offer “Mentoring sessions” to
to help students who are planning to send in entries to the National
Science and Technology fair (called “IRIS”).
The idea of our mentoring sessions is to give students with project ideas
a forum to discuss their project ideas with scientists, and to get further
ideas on how to develop their projects. NCL scientists, Dr. Chetan
Gadgil and Dr. BLV Prasad, have agreed to be available for an hour
after the NCL Outreach talk to discuss your project ideas with you. We
will begin this in February (on 28 Feb, after the Outreach talk). If you
already have a project idea that you want to work on, great! You can
talk to Chetan and Prasad about it. If you don’t, then they will discuss
how you could go about selecting a topic and how to initiate and plan
your work on that topic. In the next several months, once your
projects have been formulated, you can sign up if you would like to
meet with Prasad and Chetan to discuss your projects and seek their
feedback and suggestions.

Background on IRIS:
The 2009 IRIS handbook is attached with this email. The IRIS is the
National Science and Technology fair organized by Intel, CII and DST
and is a forum for students to exhibit their science and technology
projects.
Entries are to be sent in (typically by about June – check the IRIS site
for details) and are screened to select about 100 projects for the National
finals. Entries that win at the National final receive coaching to prepare
them to participate in the International science fair held in the USA. IRIS
entries have to be “research based” – viz. these should not be simply
reports or compilation of information, but should involve some novel
work by the participant. Please see the IRIS handbook for more details
